Opportunities Available

Volunteers

Without volunteers WCM would not be able to help people in need purchase a home.  Our homes are mostly built by volunteers.  But, our volunteer opportunities are not limited to swinging a hammer, mudding drywall, painting walls, or installing baseboards.  There are many levels needed to successfully complete a Habitat house: from selecting a family, to supporting that family before and after they are in their home; from ordering the materials, to paying the bills, and more.

Listed below are some of the ways you can get involved with HFHWCM to help in our mission to try to eliminate poverty.  If you are interested in volunteering, have a question, or simply want more information, please contact the office by e-mail or phone (320-231-2704).

Builds--Below is a list of our affiliate homes currently under construction.  No experience necessary.
  • Pennock 1--Need volunteers to construct garage, Saturday, July 26, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.  No skills required, but would be helpful.  If you have a hammer, please bring it.  Drinks, snacks, and lunch provided.  Please call the office Monday - Thursday or Fridays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to let us know when you can help.  Thank you!
  • Pennock 2--Need volunteers to construct home.  Tentative start dates in late August or early September.
  • Dassel--Need volunteers to construct home.  Please call the office for more information.  Construction in process.
  • Montevideo--Need volunteers to construct home.  Tentative start dates in the fall.
  • Volunteers are needed to serve food and drinks for morning snacks and lunches.
Young children cannot be on the construction site while work is being done.  HFHWCM's policy regarding age is: “…no one under age of 16 is allowed on a construction site while construction is going on.  Further, no one under the age of 18 should be allowed to do any ultra-hazardous activities, which include the use of power tools or motor vehicles, demolition, roofing or working from a height of six feet or more, or excavation operations.”

Site Supervisor for Pennock 2-- Take advantage of the chance to use your organizational skills in a unique way.  As a site supervisor, you will be in charge of bringing a Habitat house from footings to finish.  Our site supervisor volunteers come from all stripes.  We seek and welcome anyone with the willingness to navigate a building project and the strong desire to work with a family on the construction of their home.

This position allows you to review plans, specifications, and construction sheets; coordinate the work of subcontractors and labor; monitor the materials supply; oversee the training of volunteers and partner family members; ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and building codes; and maintain safe building conditions.  Although the site supervisor role handles all facets of construction, it also involves verbal communication skills and an ability to work independently as well as with volunteers.  The site supervisor candidate need only be willing to learn and ready to work.

Habitat for Humanity West Central MN has several new builds coming up in 2008, and we are looking for dedicated, energetic people to lead them.  Call Molly Berg at (320) 231-2704 or email molly@habitatwcm.org to learn more about becoming a site supervisor.
